MONTHLY
CATECHISM QUESTIONS

This Month's Questions

November 2 - 8

Q112: What do we pray for in the first request of the Lord's Prayer?
A. In the first request, ("Hallowed be your name") we pray that God will enable us and others to glorify him in everything, and that he will work out everything to his own glory.
Scripture: Psalm 67:1-3; Malachi 1:11; Matthew 6:9; Romans 11:36; 1 Corinthians 10:31; Revelation 4:11
Memorize: Matthew 6:9
Discussion: There are six requests in the Lord's Prayer. Only one of them is concerned with making us comfortable in this life. The other five requests have to do with spiritual things. In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus taught us to pray for things that will last forever, not just for things that can only last a little while.

November 9 - 15

Q113: What do we pray for in the second request of the Lord's Prayer?
A: In the second request ("Your kingdom come") we pray that Satan's kingdom may be destroyed, and that the kingdom of grace may be advanced; that ourselves and others will be brought into it, and kept in it; and that God's eternal the kingdom of glory will come soon.
Scripture: Psalm 68:1-18; Matthew 6:10, 9:37-38; Romans 10:1; 2 Thessalonians 3:1; Revelation 22:20
Memorize: Matthew 6:10a
Discussion: Read Luke 17:20-21 and Matthew 28:18-20. How can we pray for God's kingdom to grow right now? Read Revelation 22:12-15, 20. How else can we pray for God's kingdom to come?

November 16 - 22

Q114: What do we pray for in the third request of the Lord's Prayer?
A: In the third request ("Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven") we pray that God, by his grace, will make us able and willing to know, obey, and surrender to his will in all things, as the angels in heaven do.
Scripture: Psalm 103:20-21, 25:4-5, 119:26; Matthew 6:10; Romans 12:1-2
Memorize: Matthew 6:10
Discussion: According to Matthew 7:21 and Romans 12:1-2, how can we ask that God's will be done? According to Colossians 1:9, what is another way we can ask that God's will be done?

November 23 - 29

Q115: What do we pray for in the fourth request of the Lord's Prayer?
A: In the fourth request ("Give us this day our daily bread") we pray that we may receive an adequate amount of the good things of this life as gifts of God and that with them we may enjoy his blessing.
Scripture: Proverbs 30:8-9; Matthew 6:11; 1 Timothy 6:6-8, 4:4-5
Memorize: Matthew 6:11
Discussion: When we pray "give us this day our daily bread," what does that include? What does it not include? (Check some of the Scriptures listed above).

Previous Month's Questions

Q1: Who is the first and best of beings?
A: God is the first and best of beings.
Scripture: Psalm 8:1, 96:4, 97:9, 1 Samuel 2:2
Memorize: Isaiah 44:6
Discussion: What are some ways God is First?
What is it that makes God the best of all things?

Q2: What is the chief end of man?
A: Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:31, Psalm 16:11, 37:4
Memorize: Psalm 73:25 & 27
Discussion: What does chief end mean?
Comment: Describe ways you glorify something you enjoy (Mom's cooking, favorite restaurant, toy, movie, sports team, etc.) So how do we glorify God?

Q3: How do we know there is a God?
A: The light of nature in man, and the works of God,plainly declare that there is a God; but his word and Spirit only, do effectually reveal him unto us for our salvation.
Scripture: Romans 1:18-20; Psalm 19:1-2; 2 Timothy 3:15; 1 Corinthians 1:21-24, 2:9-10; Matthew 11:27
Memorize: Romans 1:20 and/or Matthew 11:27
Discussion: According to Romans 1:18-23 what do all men know? How do all humans respond to this knowledge? According to 1 Corinthians 2:9-16, how do people come to know God?
Comment: The question distinguishes two kinds of knowledge: one is natural and comes from conscience ("the light of nature in man") and from the works of God in nature; the other is spiritual or saving, and comes from the recognition of the true value of God and the beauty of his character. Natural knowledge is possessed by all people and thus makes all people accountable to honor and thank God. Spiritual knowledge is possessed only by those whose natural blindness has been overcome by the Spirit of God (1 Cor. 2:14-16). Our children must come to see the difference between these lest they think they are saved by much natural knowledge about God -- which the devils also have (James 2:19).

Q4: What is the Word of God
A: The Scriptures of the Old and New Testament, being given by divine inspiration, are the Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice.
Scripture: 2 Peter 1:21; 2 Timothy 3:16, 17; Isaiah 8:20; Matthew 5:17-18; 1 Corinthians 2:13; Psalm 19:7-8
Memorize: 2 Timothy 3:16
Discussion: What does infallible mean?
Comment: "Scriptures" is a special word for the "writings" of the OT and NT. Perhaps you will want to explain that the OT deals with God's word that came before Jesus was born; and the NT is the word of God that came after Jesus was born. "Infallible" means it will never lead us astray in what it teaches. It is true and does not err. It can be trusted. "Faith" refers to right thinking and feeling; and "practice" refers to right doing. We measure our thoughts and emotions and actions by the rule of the Bible. "Inspiration" means that it is God-breathed: by his Spirit he guided his spokesmen to speak his word in their language.

Q5: How do we know that the Bible is the Word of God?
A: The Bible shows it is God's Word by the supernatural nature of its teaching, the unity of its parts and its power to convert sinners, and build up saints. But only the Spirit of God can make us willing to agree and submit to the Bible as the Word of God.
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:6-7, 13-16; Psalm 19:7-9; 119:18, 129; Acts 10:43; 26:22; 18:28; Hebrews 4:12; Romans 15:4; John 16:13-14; 1 John 2:20-27; 2 Corinthians 3:14-17; 4:4, 6.
Memorize: Romans 15:4
Discussion: Are you convinced the Bible is the Word of God? Why or why not? Read 2 Peter 1:16-21. Why should his readers believe he is telling the truth? What is the connection between the "prophets" (Old Testament) and the gospel of Christ that he is preaching? Where does he say the OT came from? What difference should the Scriptures make in your life?
Comment: "Heavenliness" refers to the fact that the teachings of Scripture are of such a nature that they cannot be explained by mere human resources. They bear the marks of the supernatural. "No man ever spoke like this man." (John 7:46) The "unity of its parts" has to do especially with the way all scripture points to Christ. "To him all the prophets bear witness." (Acts 10:43) There are detailed and scholarly historical arguments for the reliability of the Bible, but these are generally beyond the acquaintance of ordinary Christians, and so do not serve as widespread support for scripture. They are needed however in the scholarly arena. [See "Is the Bible a Reliable Guide to Lasting Joy" in Desiring God by John Piper (Multnomah Press, 1986)].

Q6: May all men make use of Scriptures?
A: All men are not only permitted, but commanded and exhorted to read, hear and understand the Scriptures.
Scripture: John 5:39; Luke 16:19-31; Acts 8:28-30; Acts 17:11, 2 Timothy 3:15, 30 & 31
Memorize: Acts 17:11
Discussion: Why must people know the message of the Scriptures? How are we obeying and hearing his Word? How can we encourage others to read and hear his Word?

Q7: What do the Scriptures mainly teach?
A: The Scriptures mainly teach what man is to believe about God and what duty God requires of man.
Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:16, 17; John 20:31; Acts 24:14; 1 Corinthians 10:11; Ecclesiasties 12:13
Memorize: John 20:31
Discussion: Why was the Gospel of John written? (see John 20:31). Why was 1 John written? (See 1 John 5:13). Why was the Bible written? (see 2 Timothy 3:15-17).

Q8: What is God?
A: God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth
Scripture: John 4:24; Psalm 89:14; 90:2, 147:5; James 1:17; Revelation 4:8; Exodus 34:6, 7; 1 Timothy 1:17; Numbers 23:19
Memorize: Psalm 90:2
Discussion: Get out a dictionary (Use a Bible dictionary if possible) and look up each of these attributes of God. What is the difference between saying God is "infinite" (There is no limit to how great he is) and "eternal" (He never had a beginning and will never have an ending.)?
Comment: Ask what "infinite" means (there is no limit to how great he is!) What does "eternal" mean? (He never had a beginning and will never have an ending!) Talk about how God can respond to us and yet not be "changeable" (His character never changes, he acts consistently on the same principles always. Even his responses to us are known and planned long before so that his purposes are unchanging).

Q9: Are there more Gods than one?
A: There is only one living and true God.
Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:4; Jeremiah 10:10, Psalm 96:4-5.
Memorize: Psalm 96:5
Discussion: Compare Psalm 96:5 with Jeremiah 10:10. What are the differences between the "true and living God" and all the gods of the nations?
Comment: There are "gods" which are idols, but they are not "living." And there are "gods" which are angels or demons, but they are not "true" God, that is they are not eternal, infinite and unchanging. Only one God is living and true.

Q10: How many persons are there in the Godhead?
A: There are three persons in the Godhead: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one God, the same in essence, equal in power and glory.
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:11, 8:6; John 1:1, 10:30, 14:9, 20:28; Acts 5:3-4; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:3.
Memorize: Matthew 28:19
Discussion: Read Genesis 3:13-15. What is the name of God? (Answer: I AM (Hebrew = Yahweh), the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob). In Matthew 28:19, what is the name of God? (Answer: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit).
Comment: The word "Godhead" is needed because we shouldn't say that there are three persons in God. No, there are three persons who are God. Nor should we say that there are three Gods. There is one God. They are distinct persons with special roles in creation and redemption. But they are in perfect harmony and are (in ways beyond our comprehension) perfectly One God. (See The Pleasures of God, by John Piper, Multnomah Press, pp 38, 42-44 for one explanation of the Trinity).

Q11: What are the decrees of God?
A: The decrees of God are his eternal purpose, according to the counsel of his will, whereby for his own glory, he has foreordained whatsoever comes to pass.
Scripture: Ephesians 1:11; Romans 11:36; Daniel 4:35; Isaiah 46:10, Psalm 115:3; Amos 3:6
Memorize: Ephesians 1:11
Discussion: What would be some of the results in our lives if God's plans did not always happen? How would you be affected if God's plans could be frustrated and stopped?

Q12: How does God execute his decrees?
A: God executes his decrees in the works of creation and providence.
Scripture: Genesis 1:1; Revelation 4:11; Matthew 5:45, 6:26; Acts 14:17; Proverbs 16:9, 33, 19:21, 20:24, 21:1, 31.
Memorize: Revelation 4:11
Discussion: Read the story of Paul preaching the gospel in Lystra in Acts 14:8-18. What did Paul tell these idol-worshipping people about God? What does this tell us about God's involvement in the life of every human being in the world?

Q13: What is the work of creation?
A: The work of creation is God's making all things of nothing, by the word of his power and all very good.
Scripture: Genesis 1:1, 31; Hebrews 11:3; Exodus 20:11; Romans 4:17.
Memorize: Hebrews 11:3
Discussion: How does God's creating the world affect Jeremiah in Jeremiah 32:17? What conclusions does Paul draw from the fact of God's creating in Acts 17:24-31?

Q14: How did God create man?
A: God created man male and female; after his own image, in knowledge, righteousness, and holiness, with dominion over the creatures
Scripture: Genesis 1:27-28; Colossians 3:10; Ephesians 4:24.
Memorize: Genesis 1:27
Discussion: What does it mean to be made in the image of God? (See Genesis 1 and 2; Psalm 8; Ephesians 2:22-24, 5:1-14).

Q15: What are God's works of providence?
A: God's works of providence are the holy, wise, and powerful acts which he preserves and governs all his creatures, and all their actions.
Scripture: Nehemiah 9:6; Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 1:3; Psalm 103:19; Matthew 10:29-30.
Memorize: Psalm 103:19
Discussion: Read the book of Esther and identify, as you read, all the ways God preserved and governed these people.

Q16: What special act of providence did God exercise towards man when he was first created?
A: When God created man, he made a covenant with him that he should live and enjoy all the benefits of creation, but that he would die if he forsook the obedience that comes from faith. God commanded him not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and thus forsake his child-like dependence upon God for all things.
Scripture: Genesis 2:8-17; Psalm 104:27-30
Memorize: Genesis 2:16 & 17
Discussion: A covenant is an agreement between persons. Each person promises to do certain things for the other person. Both of them must keep their promises. What did God promise to do for Adam? What did God want Adam to promise him?
Comment: The "knowledge of good and evil" is the ability to judge independently what is beneficial (good) and harmful (evil) for yourself. What God is forbidding is that man should choose to be independent from God in his evaluation of things. He is commanding man to walk by faith in the wise and loving care of his heavenly Father. (See the use of this phrase in Genesis 3:5, 22; 2 Samuel 14:17; Isaiah 7:15; 2 Samuel 19:35).

Q17: Did our first parents continue in the glad obedience for which they were created?
A: No, but desiring to be like God, our first parents forsook the obedience of faith, ate of the forbidden tree, sinned against God, and fell from the innocence in which they were created.
Scripture: Genesis 3:1-7; Ecclesiastes 7:29; Romans 5:12; Psalm 51:3-4.
Memorize: Romans 5:12
Discussion: What difference can you see between Adam and Eve's disobedience when they were tempted by Satan and the obedience of Jesus when he was tempted by Satan? (see Matthew 4:1-11).

Q18: What is sin?
A: Sin is transgression of the revealed will of God which teaches that we are to act in perfect holiness from a heart of faith to the glory of God.
Scripture: 1 John 3:4; Romans 5:13, 14:23; 1 Peter 1:16; Matthew 5:48; 1 Corinthians 10:31.
Memorize: 1 John 3:4
Discussion: Simplified: sin is any attitude or desire or action that explicitly breaks a commandment of Scripture, or comes from a heart of unbelief, or is not done for the glory of God. Look up "transgression" in the dictionary. Discuss the difference between the dictionary definition and the definition above, based on the Scripture references listed.

Q19: What was the sin of our first parents which caused them to fall from the state in which they were created to live?
A: The sin which caused our first parents fall from the state in which they were created to live was their eating the forbidden fruit.
Scripture: Genesis 3:6, 12, 13.
Memorize: Genesis 3:6
Discussion: Read Genesis 3. What was Satan's lie to Eve? What was he promising her? Why did Eve eat? What are the consequences of sin shown in Genesis 3?

Q20: Did all mankind fall in Adam's sin?
A: All mankind descending from Adam by ordinary generation, sinned in him, and fell with him in his first sin.
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:21-22; Romans 5:12, 18-19.
Memorize: Romans 5:12
Discussion: Discuss the ways an elected official represents those who elect him or her. Explain how a representative's official actions are in effect the actions of those being represented.
Comment: God considered all mankind as being in Adam so that when Adam went bad we all went bad in him. The nature that we have by virtue of belonging to Adam's race is morally corrupt. We are under the wrath of God "by nature" (Ephesians 2:3) from the time we were conceived in the womb. This is why conversion and salvation must be much more than a "decision" for Christ. It must be a new creation, a rebirth, an exchange of hearts (John 1:12-13).

Q21: What happened to mankind because of the Fall?
A. The fall brought mankind into a condition of sin and misery.
Scripture: Psalm 51:5; Romans 5:18-19, 7:18; Isaiah 53:6, 64:6; John 3:67; Ephesians 2:1-3; 1 Corinthians 2:14.
Memorize: Isaiah 53:6
Discussion: What are some of the ways we see sinfulness in ourselves and others?

Q22: What is the sinfulness of man's fallen condition?
A: The sinfulness of the condition into which all mankind fell is the guilt of Adam's first sin, the lack of original righteousness, and the corruption of our whole nature (which is commonly called original sin), together with all actual transgressions which come from this nature.
Scripture: Romans 5:19, 3:10; Ephesians 2:1; Isaiah 53:6; Psalm 51:5; Matthew 15:19.
Memorize: Isaiah 59:2
Discussion: Read Isaiah 1 or 59. How does God feel about "sinners" and how will he deal with them?
Comment: The Bible says that "in Adam all die" (1 Corinthians 15:22) and that "one transgression yields condemnation for all men" (Romans 5:18) and that "one man's disobedience made many sinners" (Romans 5:19). These statements lead us to conclude that God, in a way beyond our comprehension, established a unity between Adam and his posterity that makes it just for us to receive the imputation of his guilt and corruption. He was in some sense our representative head. We sinned in him and fell with him.

Q23: What is the misery into which all mankind fell through Adam's sin?
A: All mankind, by their fall, lost fellowship with God, are under his wrath and curse, and so made liable to all the miseries of life, to death itself, and to the pains of hell forever.
Scripture: Genesis 3:8, 24; Ephesians 2:3; Galatians 3:10; Romans 6:23; Matthew 25:41-46.
Memorize: Romans 6:23
Discussion: Does any human being "deserve" to be forgiven and blessed by God according to Romans 3:9-18 and Ephesians 2:1-3?
Comment: Keep in mind that "liable to" means that these miseries will indeed befall all people unless a special work of God's grace intervenes.

Q24: Did God leave all mankind to die in sin and misery?
A: God out of his mere good pleasure, from all eternity, having chosen a people to everlasting life, did enter into a covenant of grace, to deliver them out of the condition of sin and misery, and to bring them to a salvation, by a Redeemer.
Scripture: Ephesians 1:3-8; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; Romans 5:21, 8:29-30, 9:11-12, 11:5-7; Acts 13:48; Jeremiah 31:33
Memorize: Ephesians 1:4-6a
Discussion: How should we be affected by the statements of Ephesians 1, that God chose us according to his pleasure and will and to the praise of his grace?
Comment: The term "covenant of grace" refers to the commitment and oath of God to rescue his people from sin and judgment. It is entirely initiated and carried through by God. It cannot fail. (see The Baptist Catechism booklet for further explanation).

Q25: Who is the Redeemer of God's elect?
A. The only Redeemer of God's elect is the Lord Jesus Christ, who, being the eternal Son of God, became man, and so was and continues to be God and man, in two distinct natures and one person, forever.
Scripture: Galatians 3:13, 4:3; 1 Timothy 2:5; John 1:14; Colossians 2:9
Memorize: Galatians 3:13
Discussion: What do the words "redeem", "redemption", and "redeemer" mean? (Check an English dictionary and/or a Bible dictionary)

Q26: How did Christ, being the Son of God, become man?
A: Christ, the Son of God, became man by taking to himself a true body and a reasonable soul. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and was born of her, yet without sin.
Scripture: Hebrews 2:14, 4:14-15, 7:26; John 1:14, 12:27; Luke 1:31, 35, 2:52; Colossians 2:9
Memorize: Hebrews 4:15
Discussion: Why is it important that as our Redeemer, Jesus is both God and man, divine and human?

Q27: What offices does Christ perform as our Redeemer?
A: Christ, as our Redeemer, performs the offices of a prophet, of a priest, and of a king, both in his condition of humiliation and exaltation.
Scripture: Acts 3:22; 1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 5:6; Psalm 2:6; Philippians 2:6-11
Memorize: Philippians 2:8-9
Discussion: What is a priest? What does it mean that Jesus is a priest?

Q28: How does Christ perform the office of a prophet?
A: Christ performs the office of a prophet, in revealing to us, by his Word and Spirit, the will of God for our salvation.
Scripture: John 1:18, 5:24, 14:6, 15:15; Revelation 1:5
Memorize: John 5:24
Discussion: What is a prophet? From the statements in the Gospel of John listed above, why can we call Jesus a prophet?

Q29: How is Christ a priest?
A: Christ is a priest by having offered himself as a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice, and to reconcile us to God; and by making continual intercession for us before God.
Scripture: 1 Peter 2:24; Hebrews 2:17, 7:25, 9:28; Ephesians 5:2; Romans 8:34
Memorize: Hebrews 2:17
Discussion: In addition to the Scripture references above, read Leviticus 16. Consider ways the Day of Atonement "pictures" Jesus as a priest.

Q30: How is Christ a king?
A: Christ is a king, in subduing us to himself, in ruling and defending us, and in restraining and conquering all his and our enemies.
Scripture: Psalm 110:1-2; Matthew 2:6; Luke 1:32-33; 1 Corinthians 15:25; Philippians 2:9-11; Revelation 1:5-6
Memorize: Revelation 1:5
Discussion: Using the cross reference notes in your Bible or a study Bible, see how many places Psalm 110 is quoted by Jesus and the Apostles, and how it is applied to Jesus.

Q31: What do we mean by Christ's humiliation?
A: By Christ's humiliation we mean that he became human and was born into a poor family, that he lived under the Old Testament laws , and that he underwent the difficulties of this life, the wrath of God, and the cursed death of the cross; that he was buried, and continued under the power of death for a time.
Scripture: Luke 2:7; Galatians 4:4; Isaiah 53:3; Luke 22:44; Matthew 12:40, 27:46; Philippians 2:8; Mark 15:45-46
Memorize: Philippians 2:8
Discussion: Read all or parts of Mark 14 and 15 to see how Jesus was humiliated.

Q32: What do we mean by Christ's exaltation?
A: By Christ's exaltation we mean his rising again from the dead on the third day, ascending up into heaven, sitting at the right hand of God the Father, and coming to judge the world at the last day.
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:4; Acts 1:11; Mark 16:19; Acts 17:31; Philippians 2:9-11
Memorize: Philippians 2:10
Discussion: Who are some "exalted" people in our society? Why are they exalted? How are these people treated? How should we treat Jesus?

Q33: How are we made partakers of the redemption purchased by Christ?
A: We are made partakers of the redemption purchased by Christ, by the effective application of it to us, by his Holy Spirit.
Scripture: John 3:5-8; Titus 3:5-6; Ezekiel 36:26-27
Memorize: Titus 3:5 & 6
Discussion: How do you know the wind is blowing? Can you control the wind? How do you know if the Holy Spirit has made a person a partaker of Christ's redemption, i.e. that he has given a person spiritual life? (see 1 John 5:1).

Q34: How does the Holy Spirit apply to us the redemption purchased by Christ?
A: The Spirit applies to us the redemption purchased by Christ. He awakens us to hear God's call and enables us to believe in Christ.
Scripture: 1 John 5:1; Philippians 1:29; Ephesians 2:8; Acts 16:14, 18:27; John 3:8, 6:63-65
Memorize: John 6:65
Discussion: Look up the verses in Acts above. Can you see how God's Spirit was helping people to believe in Jesus?

Q35: What is effectual calling?
A. Effectual calling is the work of God's Spirit, to convince us of our sin and misery, to enlighten our minds in the knowledge of Christ, to renew our wills, and thus persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the gospel.
Scripture: 2 Timothy 1:9; John 6:44-45, 16:8-11; Acts 2:37, Ezekiel 36:26; Romans 8:30; 1 Corinthians 12:3
Memorize: 2 Thessalonians 2:13 & 14
Discussion: Consider the story of the resurrection of Lazarus in John 11. How is the condition of every human similar to Lazarus in the tomb (Ephesians 2:1)? How was Lazarus able to obey Jesus' command to come out? According to the above Scriptures, how did you obey Jesus' command to respond and trust him?

Q36: What benefits do those who are effectually called receive in this life?
A: Those who are effectually called receive in this life justification, adoption, sanctification, and the several benefits which in this life accompany or flow from them.
Scripture: Romans 8:30-32; 1 Corinthians 1:30-31; 6:11; Ephesians 2; Psalm 103:1-5
Memorize: 1 Corinthians 1:30
Discussion: If you have put your faith in Jesus to save you, you have received certain benefits. A benefit is something that makes life better for us. Often, we earn benefits. According to Ephesians 2, what are some benefits God gives us that we do not earn ourselves?
Comment: We must distinguish effectual calling from the general call of the gospel. Not all who hear the gospel believe. But all who are effectually called by God do believe. The call enables what it commands.

Q37: What is justification?
A: Justification is an act of God's free grace, by which he pardons all our sins, and accepts us as righteous in his sight. He does so only because he counts the righteousness of Christ as ours. Justification is received by faith alone.
Scripture: Romans 3:22-24, 5:1, 2, 19; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Ephesians 1:7; Philippians 3:9; Galatians 2:16, Psalm 32:1-2
Memorize: 2 Corinthians 5:21
Discussion: Do you have a bank account? How much money is in it? What is the only way you could buy the Mackinac Bridge from money in your bank account?

Q38: What is adoption?
A: Adoption is an act of God's free grace, by which we are received into the company of God's children and have a right to all the privileges of his family.
Scripture: John 1:12; Romans 8:15-17; Galatians 4:4-7;1 John 3:1-2
Memorize: John 1:12
Discussion: What are some benefits of belonging to your family? Are there similar benefits in belonging to God's family?

Q39: What is sanctification?
Sanctification is the work of God's free grace by which we are renewed in the whole person after the image of God, and are enabled more and more to set aside sin, and live unto righteousness.

Scripture: John 1:12, 6:35; Romans 3:22-24; Galatians 2:15-16, 20; Ephesians 2:8-9; Philippians 3:9; Hebrews 10:39
Memorize: Ephesians 2:8-9
Discussion: Read Ephesians 2:8-9. God requires us to have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ to escape the curse our sin deserves. What Jesus has done in our place is what saves us. Faith is the way we reach out and receive for ourselves what he has done. Faith in Christ is a gift of God. God requires faith from us and then He himself gives us that faith so we can escape His curse.

Q 94: What is repentance unto life?
A: Repentance unto life is a saving grace, by which a sinner, being truly aware of his sinfulness understands the mercy of God in Christ, grieves for and hates his sins, turns from them to God, fully intending and striving for a new obedience.
Scripture: Ezekiel 36:26-27; Joel 2:13; Acts 2:37; Acts 11:18; Romans 6:17-18; 2 Corinthians 7:9-10
Memorize: Psalm 51:1-2
Discussion: Repentance is a saving grace. It is something God gives to His people. On our own, we would not repent of our sin. Like faith in Christ, repentance is not something that we could come up with on our own.

Q95: What are the ordinary, external ways Christ uses to bring us the benefits of redemption?
A. The ordinary, external ways Christ uses to bring us the benefits of redemption are his ordinances and commands, especially the Word, Baptism, the Lord's Supper, and Prayer; all of which are made effective for the salvation of his chosen ones.
Scripture: Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:41-42; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; 1 Timothy 2:1-4; James 1:21-25; Jude 20-21
Memorize: Acts 2:42
Discussion: In Acts 2:42 we read that the first Christians observed four practices. What are the four listed? Do you know what each one means? How do you see these practices in our church today?

Q96: What makes the Word effective for salvation?
A: The Spirit of God causes the reading, and especially the preaching of the Word, to convince and convert sinners, and to build them up in holiness and comfort, through faith unto salvation.
Scripture: Psalm 19:7, 119:11, 18; Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 1:21; Ephesians 6:17; 1 Thessalonians 1:6; Hebrews 4:12; 1 Peter 2:2
Memorize: 1 Corinthians 2:9-10
Discussion: Look up the following references in the Bible and answer the question: How does God's Spirit work in people's hearts through His word?
Psalm 19:7, 119:18 and Hebrews 4:12

Q97: How is the Word to be read and heard in order to become effective for salvation?
A: For the Word to become effective for salvation we must pay careful attention to it, prepare ourselves, and pray for understanding. We must also receive it with faith and love, treasure it in our hearts, and practice it in our lives.
Scripture: Job 23:
