. . . His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

--Lamentations 3:22, 23

0298I Can Do Today

Several of us memorized this sentence from the Bible about 15 years ago. Since memorizing it, I have repeatedly discovered that this Scripture statement is not just comforting, it's true. God's compassions and the strength that goes with it indeed are new and freshly there for us with every morning's sunrise. Sometimes I am conscious of that, other times I'm not.

Recently, a couple of things have been happening to me which have made me more conscious of God's fresh daily injections of strength, joy, and hope at the break of day. For one thing, I haven't been sleeping as well. Maybe it's too much coffee or too many things on my mind. Maybe that's what happens when a guy turns 50. For whatever reason, at times I've found myself laying awake in the netherworld of darkness waiting for morning to arrive. For me those are vulnerable times when problems seem too big, too complicated, and too many to handle. Laying on our bed awake at night I cannot find solutions to the problems that come to mind, or the peace of mind to let them go. But almost like magic when morning comes, my peace returns and the strength is present to get up and face life in the new day ahead. I begin the day with fresh, distinct confidence that "I can do today" because God has been faithful again, true to His Word.

I don't think I'm unique by the way. I think God is doing the same thing for you too, though you may not have noticed yet. Which reminds me of a second reason for my reawakening to this reality. I keep meeting up with God's truth about mornings, stated in other words, in other places in the Bible. Here are three examples from Psalms:

Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. --Psalm 90:14

. . . weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. --Psalm 30:5

. . . where morning dawns and evening fades you call forth songs of joy. --Psalm 65:8

By his empowering compassion every morning without fail, "I can do today." So can you.
